Our firefighters spent time meeting students and staff, handing out prizes, and joining in on the excitement with games like tug-of-war and half-court basketball shots. We even had one student sink an incredible half-court shot! 🏀
Events like these are about more than just fun. They help our students build meaningful connections with the public servants who work every day to keep our community safe. Positive relationships with local firefighters and first responders help students see the important role they play and inspire a greater sense of community and service.

READ 180 Scholars Continue Culinary Adventures
Students in Mrs. Elizabeth Harkins' READ 180 class continue to expand their horizons by exploring new foods and cuisines. As part of their ongoing efforts to learn about nutrition and healthy eating, scholars recently had the opportunity to sample rainbow carrots provided by Mrs. Teena Carr.
The colorful carrots sparked excitement and curiosity as students discovered that carrots can be purple, yellow, white, and orange. Before tasting them, scholars learned about the many health benefits of rainbow carrots, which are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and nutrients that support overall health and wellness.
Mrs. Carr shared information about the nutritional value of rainbow carrots and encouraged students to be open to trying new foods. Many scholars were eager to sample the vibrant vegetables, while others demonstrated courage by stepping outside their comfort zones to taste something unfamiliar.
Under the guidance of Mrs. Elizabeth Harkins, the activity connected literacy, learning, and healthy living. Students engaged in discussions about nutrition, food choices, and the importance of maintaining a balanced diet.
The experience was another successful step in the READ 180 program's mission to encourage curiosity, build confidence, and expose scholars to new experiences. Yesterday, we celebrated our staff by giving those with July and August birthday a Birthday card and a free appetizer coupon to Texas Roadhouse. This was followed by celebrating all staff members with Perfect Attendance for the month of August. All their names were put in a drawing and Ms. Dickens was the winner of a $25 Publix Gift Card. To close out our recognitions, we highlighted our August Teachers of the month, Mr. Huskins and Ms. Hughes who truly exemplify and model what it means to be a teacher leader. Our Support Person of the Month of August, Ms. Moreland is truly an honorable perfectionist and ensures our students and staff receive the PERFECT amount of thoroughness and attention to detail! Congratulations to everyone!

The success of Putnam County Charter School Nutrition Director Teena Carr's weekly Wellness Classes at Putnam County Elementary School has been so exciting that Putnam County Middle School wanted to join in on the fun! Last week, Mrs. Carr visited two of Mrs. Harkins' classes and introduced students to a fruit that was completely new to them: star fruit! 🌟
Not a single student in the classes had ever tried star fruit before, but by the end of the lesson, students were asking for extra samples and leaving with a new favorite snack.
That's exactly what these wellness classes are all about: expanding students' minds and palates, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, and helping them discover healthy foods they may never have considered trying. Through hands-on experiences like these, students are learning that healthy choices can be both fun and delicious!
